1938 Knucklehead

So i rarely post on the clubs blog. But i decided i would share a picture of my newest bike. This picture was taken by Scott Pommier this past weekend at the Born Free bike show. I built the bike over the last few months and got it up and running in just raw steel and no paint. I rode it for a month to work all the kinks out of the bike and on sunday i tore into the bike and pulled it completely apart to have everything chromed and have Harpoon do the paint work. The plain is to have the bike back together and done in time for the Grand National Roadster show. Hope you like, i will post more pics when its all finished. And oh yeah thats a 4 over VL springer

Rescue INk Unleased - Animal Rescue and Motorcycles

Seems the National Geographic Channel has a few shows and series this season that involve motorcycles. I mentioned earlier in my blog the show, Motorcycle Crash Tech. Now there is a series, Rescue INk Unleased, that, although it is not about motorcycles, it does feature motorcycles. Here's an excerpt from a Press Release:

Rescue INk unleashed is a new weekly series that documents this unlikely group of animal activists on their crusade to save helpless, abandoned and abused animals. Featured on “Ellen” and in The New York Times, this eclectic band of brothers — composed of club bouncers, security guards and even a retired New York Police Department (NYPD) detective — is on call 24/7 to take on cases no one else will. They’re not cops, animal experts or even animal control. They’re just big guys with even bigger hearts and a desire to save animals from deplorable living conditions and abusive or simply misguided owners. Each one-hour episode of Rescue INk unleashed takes viewers on “ride-alongs” as members follow up on leads in the New York metro area. Taking an average of 100 calls a week at their headquarters on Long Island, they jump into their cars — or on their “hogs” — and confront alleged animal abusers, rescue fighting dogs, investigate stolen animals and (firmly) encourage owners to give up their pets if it is in the best interest of the animals.

The first episode runs Friday, September 25th at 10 p.m. ET on the National Geographic Channel. It's called, "It’s a Cruel, Cruel World"

Motorcycle Crash Tech TV on National Geographic Channel

It also appears September 18th at midnight and September 24th at 5 p.m.

Motorcycle Sales Down!

Yesterday the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI) released August's sales figures for powered two-wheelers.

7,020 new powered two wheelers (PTWs) were registered in August 2009, totalling 79,897 this year. An 18.2 per cent fall on 2008 and a fall of 30.5 per cent on August 2008!!!

However the Department of Transport's National Survey gives a positive boost to biking here in the UK, revealing that over half (52%) of all motorcycle trips in 2008 were made for the purpose of commuting. The National Travel Survey also found that the average motorcyclist uses their bike as their main mode of transport for over one-third of all trips, making 8 motorcycle trips a week, and travelling 80 miles.

Ride safe.

Norton Model 18s to the Isle of Man

How far can you go on a late 1920s Norton? More than a 1000 kilometres in a week is no problem. We mounted our Nortons in Utrecht, rode them to Ijmuiden and took the ferry to Newcastle-upon-Tyne. From Newcastle we went through the Yorkshire dales to take the next ferry from Heysham to Douglas. We spent four days exploring the Isle of Man before riding them back home again via the same route. Most of the time through the worst British weather you can imagine.

The two photos on top depict our bikes; two 1928- and a 1930 Model 18. The other pictures are from other Nortons that we saw on the Isle.

Both Patrick's and my bike had done very few miles after complete rebuilds that included fitting a new bigend and gearbox bearings. Little did go wrong though, Pat had to adjust the gearbox shift lever and retime the ignition. My Model 18 initially got too much oil, which resulted in heavy smoking, oiled up sparkplugs and me almost missing a ferry. Thereafter it consumed three sparkplugs before I fitted a hotter NGK A6 that seems to work fine. Before I left I had fitted a new ignition (or sparkplug) cable and during the trip through heavy rain we found that the outer cover of that cable was made from cotton, which got soaking wet and was very efficient in leaking current away from the plug; fitting a plastic cable and a polythene bag to shield the magneto from the rain solved that problem. Rob managed to break his primary chain which was replaced in the paddock in Douglas.

All in all, no serious problems. To be honest, the other seven bike that joined us in the trip, all of them more than half a century old, encountered no more serious difficulties other than a few loosened nuts and bolts. Though one of these bikes seemed to be so eager to meet it's maker Edward Turner that it set itself on fire TWICE, but it kept on running and got back home under it's own power, which must be a testimony to the quality of pre war British engineering!
